Artist Profile
Mark E. Johnson
The last thing Mark ever dreamed of doing was painting “en plein air”. As an engineer working for Honeywell and designing flight deck systems for commercial aircraft, Mark encountered an issue with color and light on an LCD flight deck display. Asking his good friend, renowned artist Kevin Macpherson, about subtle differences in colors led to his discovery and ultimate passion for painting “en plein air”. His creative side unfolded as he came to understand color and light through a myriad of workshops and mentoring programs with Kevin Macpherson, Jo Ann Arnett, John Burton, John Budicin and others. After years of traveling extensively through the United States, Canada and Europe painting outdoors in oils, Mark has come into his own. He has won the Scottsdale Art School’s “Best of the Brightest” award and has been featured in The Artist’s Magazine. In 2002, Mark left the engineering world and moved to northern New Mexico where he has been able to indulge his passions for painting, skiing and golfing. Periodically combining his passions, Mark has integrated his experience in painting outdoors with his knowledge of both sports to artfully capture the experience of playing an exceptional golf course or carving the perfect turn on a beautiful winter afternoon.
